What Is Avocademy? (Student’s Perspective)

Avocademy is a place that consolidates the world of UX and UI design in one location. The point of the course is to make you conduct activities that simulate what real UX and UI designers do.

The entire course is a capstone project, in other words, it is one giant project that is broken down into many bits and pieces so that by the end of the course, you have an actual project that you can be proud of and show to potential employers as proof of your skills.

Why I Chose Avocademy

At first, I was hesitant to invest the money into a course that I wasn’t 100% sure of, but after enough hesitation, I eventually decided to apply, as I wanted to make a change in life and wasn’t getting anywhere just sitting and waiting. I thought I should take the dive, and I’m glad I did.

Before applying, I thought “I can do this with free resources, I don’t need to pay anything.” But I soon came to realize that this was not the case.

Finding bits and pieces of courses and videos here and there was honestly tiring and uneventful. Things would be skipped, and never really felt any improvement. Most importantly I had no guidance.

Avocademy professionally puts everything in one place. They provide mentoring and feedback, and most importantly, you leave the course with proof of your skills that employers can visually see.

How Does Avocademy Work?

In terms of course content, Avocademy consists of 6 large modules, each module focusing on one critical aspect of either UX research, or UI design. Each module has video lessons, along with a few activities that you will need to complete and submit.

The course allows you to take it at your own pace, although they estimate it should only take about 16 weeks.

Avocademy modules

As mentioned earlier, Avocademy is a capstone project, so every activity builds on the previous. This is why it is essential that every part be perfect or else you cannot move on.

Avocademy’s Mentor Review

Avocademy has around 30 mentors who are constantly going over student’s submissions, and only when every single criteria is met do they approve the activity and allow the student to move on to the next.

If for whatever reason an activity doesn’t get approved, the mentor who reviewed your work will send you detailed feedback as to what exactly needs to be improved and why. The mentor feedback is honestly what sets Avocademy apart. If you ever hope to improve at anything in life, going at it alone will only get you so far. But in this case, you have experts in the field telling you where you messed up and how to improve.

Mentor feedback rubric

Here is an example from myself where I did not successfully have my activity approved. This image shows the top of the rubric, and below is every aspect of my work that needs improvement.

One such instance when the mentor reviews were exceptionally helpful was when I was working on my wireframes.

Wireframes first iteration

Here are some of the many wireframes I created for my project. This was my first iteration and honestly they are pretty embarrassingly done.

These are supposed to be medium fidelity wireframes, or in other words, everything needs to be perfect to the pixel. These wireframes are supposed to show the final product to a tee, minus the colors and images.

Yes, med-fi wireframes are essentially the final product without all of the content put in place, and my first iteration was the furthest thing from it.

Wireframes final iteration

Now compare the previous wireframes to this final iteration. After 4 entire submissions, I was finally able to create something professional.

With each submission, I was receiving nearly 20 minute long screen recordings from mentors who would critically analyze EVERY little detail regarding my work.

They would point out inconsistencies in my design, give their expert opinions, and tell me best practices from professionals in the industry. This is something you can’t get anywhere else, definitely not when trying to do it with free resources.

I honestly felt myself improving at such a rapid pace, and every piece of advice I received from the mentors I would say to myself things like “Of course! That is so much better than what I did!” and “Why didn’t I think of that?!”

Let me tell you, I underestimated how much of a challenge this would be, but the detailed mentorship I received made me grow at an exponential rate.

To top it all off, as long as you remain a student, you can have unlimited 1 on 1 mentorship calls with the mentors of the course to go into detail regarding anything about the course.

What Else Will You Learn?

Avocademy touches every base when it comes to teaching you everything about UX and UI research and design.

UX Research

Avocademy teaches you the entire UX research process. This is essential if you want to become a UX researcher. You will go in depth about surveys, user-centered design, competitive research and so, so much more.

Professionals in the field dedicate a large portion of their time and resources to doing user research. It is of the utmost importance that you not only create something that users will like, but also something that genuinely solves the user’s problems.

Avocademy knows this, so before you do any designing, you will do a LOT of research, and synthesizing of research, just like professionals in the industry do.

UI Design

Next, you will spend a large portion of time ideating, sketching, wireframing, and finally designing the final high fidelity screens.

Avocademy knows that design is a process, and they instill that very truth into how they teach the course.

Every aspect of the capstone project is aimed at slowly but surely improving your design, all while doing activities that professionals in the field do.

Ideation sketches

Yes, these are the very first sketches I did in my ideation phase. Crucial and essential, despite how they may look.

Sketches

I then made some more high quality sketches actually accounting for the user experience. I then moved onto the wireframing which was shown previously.

High fidelity screens

And here are some of my many final screens. Getting to this point was a journey as it should be. Any resource online teaching you how to use Figma to create such screens are skipping EVERYTHING.

Its exactly like telling someone who has never built a house to just start building. Absolutely not. There are a number of essential steps that need to be properly put in place before you can even think of putting together the final product.

Everything you see in these final screens of mine were done after lots of research and testing; all with the user in mind to create a good user experience. That is something that could not have been accomplished had I simply skipped to designing the final screens like many people do.

Instead, Avocademy guides you through every step of the way, telling you why certain actions are taken before others, until you reach the final high fidelity screens, as it should be done, the correct and professional way.

Prototyping

Avocademy also goes into depth regarding how to prototype your application. Prototyping is what allows you and others to actually use the application as if it were a completed product.

Prototype on Figma

Here is my prototype that I created for my application. It gets very intricate, however, with the mentor’s guidance I was able to create a seamlessly working prototype.

You can connect icons, buttons, screens, and more, which is great for testing the user experience and complexity of tasks.

My prototype in action

Usability Testing

Now that you have a working prototype, you will move onto usability testing.

You will conduct usability testing sessions with other students on Zoom. They will use your application and you will receive feedback. Again, this gets very detailed and intricate, far beyond how I am describing it, but just for you to get the general gist of it.

These are all industry standard practices that Avocademy is preparing you for. As a professional in this industry, you MUST be confident and competent in all of these aspects of the design process.

Dedicated Slack Channel

Another huge plus to Avocademy is the dedicated Slack channel that exists for your benefit.

Here, you have direct access to all of the other students and mentors. You can ask questions, start discussions, receive special announcements and more.

You will find yourself using this more than you think.

Speaker Series

Along with the general course, you will also be enrolled in the Speaker Series at no additional cost. Here, livestreams are routinely held featuring UX and UI professionals going into details regarding every aspect aspiring designers could possibly want to know more about.

Speaker Series topics

The best part? Its all archived!

That’s right. You can go back and rewatch any of the livestreams that took place in the past to learn more to your hearts content.

Honestly, each one of these categories houses an enormous playlist of archived streams that you cannot find anywhere else on the internet. It truly is a treasure chest for anyone who is devoted to UX and UI design.

You won’t ever run out of things to watch and learn.

Ok, But Can I REALLY Get a Job?

Yes, you really can, and I’ll prove it to you.

I once had the same exact question as you did. Hesitant and wondering if this course will ever amount to anything. I remember the moment I joined the dedicated Slack channel and saw the “wins” channel.

The “wins” channel is a place where students of the course go to share their job offers. Day after day, the sight of dozens of students getting jobs motivated me to no end.

Rather than explain, here is one example that was posted just a few days ago: (Zoom in to read if necessary)

Win example from Avocademy

This is just one example of literally an uncountable amount found on this Slack channel. I did not cherry-pick this post, it was simply the most recent one posted on the channel.

I still remember spending my first day, unsure and hesitant, reading all of these posts. Seeing literally hundreds, maybe thousands of students just like myself, landing jobs as a result of Avocademy.

About every day or two, there is a new posting, and keep in mind, these posts are entirely optional! That means that there are even more people landing jobs as a result of Avocademy but they simply decide not to post their journey!

You too can be like that one day!

Summary

By the end of the course, I had a firm understanding of every aspect of UX research methods, and intuitive UI design. This is because every activity I completed put me in the position of someone with that career, and along with the mandatory feedback I received from each submission, I found myself learning and developing my skills with ease.

If you really are trying to make a drastic career change, there is nobody who does it better than the people at Avocademy.
